A Beach Boys Fan Finishes Album With The Help Of AI
AI is continuing to make its mark on the recording industry. Recently we brought you the news that a British group released a “lost album” of infamously-split group Oasis using AI-generated vocals of Liam Gallagher, much to the rocker’s approval.
Now an industrious fan of The Beach Boys has “completed” an unfinished album of the infamous group. Mike LeRoy released his version of “Smile,” a work that never got off the ground reportedly due to Brian Wilson’s mental illness and drug abuse. The follow-up to “Pet Sounds” was instead released as a stripped-down version, “Smiley Smile,” in 1967.
LeRoy admits to essentially training a “singing voice conversional model” to learn how to sing as Wilson. And though he debated himself, saying “I was pretty sure the community would be morally opposed to AI vocals,” the fan eventually decided it was time to “unleash (‘Smile’) on the world.” “If you turn off your mind and, perhaps sing along,” encouraged LeRoy. “ It can really feel like Brian sang on these.” Creepy or awesome? You decide.
