Population Of Papua, New Guinea Doubles Overnight

In a data-driven world, it’s surprising to find out that you’ve missed counting almost nine million people in a country, but that’s what the prime minister of Papua New Guinea is saying. James Marape admitted that he didn’t know how many people lived in the country after the United Nations came up with a different count of the population than the government gave.

The United Nations Population Fund said the total population of Papua New Guinea could be around 17 million people, but the nation was thought to only have around 9.4 million living there. The new estimate cuts the country’s per capita income to around a thousand dollars, making it one of the world’s poorest countries.
