ST LAWRENCE COUNTY COURTHOUSE ILLUMINATED IN GREEN FROM NOVEMBER 7-13 INSUPPORT OF VETERANS DURING ‘OPERATION GREEN LIGHT’*

Canton, NY –St.Lawrence County AdministratorRuth Doyle, announced that the Court House tower will once again be illuminated green as part of Operation Green Light, aninitiative that originatedbetween St Lawrence County, the National Association of Counties (NACo), the NYS Association ofCounties,and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association.On Monday,November 7th, the St.Lawrence County Board of Legislators adopted ResolutionNo. 395-2022in support of ‘Operation Green Light.”

The mission of Operation Green Lightis to show support for veterans of all military conflicts, with a special emphasis on the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as raise awareness about the challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.“Byshiningagreen lightfrom the Tower of the Court House, we are expressing our profound gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions our veterans and their families made on the battlefield, fromhome.” said ChairWilliam Sheridan. “At a time when our country has been divided on so many things, we can all agree that the men and women who risked and sacrificed their lives fighting to protect our country and our way of life deserve our support. I encourage everyone to join with us in displaying a green light for our veterans.”Residents areencouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light thatsparks aconversation with friends.County Administrator Ruth Doyle said,“By shining a green light, we remind veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported”.While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day (November 7th-13th), participantsare encouraged to continue shining the light all of Novemberthe month when veterans are especiallyhonored.St. Lawrence County, a political subdivision of the State of New York, is large and geographically diverse; located along New York’s northern border with Canada, its population of 108,505 lives primarily in five primary population centers.Seventeen K-12 school districts cover the County, as well as five colleges and universities. Approximately 40% of the County is located within the Adirondack Park (a 6 million acre region encompassing large wilderness areasand known for its “patchwork” of public and private lands), and 78 miles are nestled along the expansive St. Lawrence River. From Canton, the County Seat, major metropolitan areas such as Syracuse, Ottawa, and Montreal are two or less hours away.
