Worlds Oldest Penguin Celebrates 41st Birthday

A celebration is in order for a penguin and all her friends. A female gentoo penguin named Olde has landed herself in the Guinness World Records book after becoming the Earth’s oldest captive penguin at age 41.

Penguins are native to Antarctica and the surrounding islands. They typically live around 30 years in captivity, and around half that in the wild. Despite the impressive accolade, Olde is not one to hog the spotlight. Zookeepers at Denmark’s Odense Zoo say that Olde is very quiet and usually keeps to herself.

And while the zoo staffers don’t like to play favorites, the elderly lady does “receive a little special treatment over the other penguins,” according to the zookeepers. They say she does get private feedings from time to time so she doesn’t have to duke it out with her younger neighbors.
