A Bakery Worker Was Fired After 44 years On The Job For Accepting Cash

In Notts, England, 60-year-old Megan Metcalfe has worked at Birds Bakery for 44 years, 25 of those years as a manager. But she’s been fired because she accepted cash as a payment from a customer.

The bakery stopped accepting cash for hygiene reasons amid the pandemic but Megan accepted around $200 in cash from an elderly couple because they didn’t have a credit card to pay for their order. So she simply put the cash in her purse, then used her own debit card to complete the transaction. She said, “At no point did money transfer hands. It was straight into my purse and then I put the payment through on card and showed them the receipt.” However, the bakery says she put others in danger by doing so.

Of course, now the bakery has a PR nightmare on their hands after 10,000 people had already signed an online petition demanding Megan’s reinstatement after just two days. Lesley Bird, chief operating officer at Birds Bakery, said: “At Birds, we take the safety of our staff and customers very seriously – and have very tight procedures in place during this pandemic.”
