Ways To Recreate Summer Camp Experience At Home

Now that the school year is over or almost over, kids would be getting ready for summer camp. But this year a lot of camps are canceled or at least not running the way they usually do. If you’re trying to figure out what to do with your kids this summer, here are some fun ideas from camp counselors for recreating the experience at home:

  • Take it outside – Camp happens outdoors, so whatever you’re doing, teacher and camp director Sarah Kotko suggests taking it outside. From art projects to science activities, she advises going outside to do it in the fresh air and sunshine.
  • Make new friends, but keep the distance – It’s hard to meet new people while you’re stuck at home, but encourage kids to socialize virtually this summer. Camp Fire Heart and YMCA of Youngstown are both offering “camp in a box” programs where small groups meet up online and work on activities as a team.
  • Keep groups small, even on Zoom – When you connect your kids with their friends using technology, try to limit it to two or three kids and 10 at the max. They can’t interact as much when there are too many children, so they get more out of it with fewer kids.
  • Just keep them busy – Stop stressing about what the kids are doing and just try to keep them occupied. Simple things like arts and crafts projects and playing outside are great for their development and they’re fun.
  • Use what you already have – At camp, they give kids things and tell them to go create and play, so try that at home. Some ideas include:
    • Have a “color of the rainbow” week where you choose a color for each day and wear and eat things in that shade.
    • Have a PJ week and wear jammies and build pillow forts
    • Make a scavenger hunt of things you have in your house.
  • Just keep them busy – Stop stressing about what the kids are doing and just try to keep them occupied. Simple things like arts and crafts projects and playing outside are great for their development and they’re fun, which is what kids really want this summer.
