David Mitchell was done in by a bet. The English man was enjoying his Saturday lunch and beer at the White Hart Inn when three construction workers came in and ended up betting him $6 he couldn’t eat four pickled eggs in one minute.

Mitchell took the bet and ended up getting all four eggs in his mouth before admitting defeat. The 66-year-old paid the men, who then left. According to bartender Barry Wiggins, he asked Mitchell if he wanted to spit out the eggs, but he refused. Then, Mitchell choked, collapsed at the bar, and died.

The craziest part? Mitchell’s wife Carol wasn’t surprised. “It was pickled eggs wasn’t it?” she reportedly told police. “It’s just the sort of thing he would do.”
