Most pet owners will tell you their dog or cat is a member of the family so it’s no surprise that most of those folks won’t be forgetting their four-legged friends when it comes time to do their holiday shopping.
According to a new report, pet owners are likely to spend an average of $62 each on dogs, cats or both, although it seems dogs are more likely to be the ones getting pampered over the holidays. In fact, data shows that dogs are two and a half times more likely to get a gift under the tree than cats.
Overall, Millennials are likely to spend the most on their pet, $81, followed by Gen Xers ($79), families with children ($71) and singles ($70). In addition, the report finds that Californians are the most likely to get gifts for both dogs and cats, with New York in second for both, and Florida third for dogs, but Pennsylvania third for cats.
As for what those pets will be getting, the most popular search for dogs include:
- dog bed
- dog collar
As for cats, the most popular gift searches include
- cat toy
- “scratch” items
