Science Says Eating Cheese Is Actually Good For Your Heart
If you never met a cheese plate you didn’t like, but end up feeling guilty from your gouda or brie overload – you don’t have to anymore. According to a new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, eating cheese is good for your heart!
Cheese has gotten a bad rep, so researchers at Penn State University looked at the impact cheese has on our cardiovascular system. “Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in developed countries like the U.S.,” explains researcher Anna Stanhewicz. “So it’s important to know how to treat the disease and how to prevent it.”
What researchers found is that dairy – specifically the kind found in cheese – actually has a positive effect on the heart because milk proteins and dairy fat help increase blood flow. And since cheese contains sodium as well as dairy, the scientists wanted to know if the sodium levels in cheese cancelled out the dairy benefits. And get this – they found study participants who ate real cheese had better blood pressure than those who had the same amount of sodium in pretzels and soy cheese.
So until another study cancels out the awesome conclusion of this one, let’s all celebrate with some cheddar and a Swiss chaser!
