Your Morning Routine Could Be Making You Gain Weight
So you’re committed to dropping a few pounds and getting in shape, but even after you give up happy hour and ordering take out five nights a week, you’re still having trouble and you’re not sure why. Well, it turns out, you could be making mistakes when you first wake up that could be affecting your whole day. Here are some morning habits that might be messing with your weight loss goals.
You oversleep – Getting too much sleep could be causing you to gain weight. According to a study in PLOS One, sleeping more than 10 hours a night raised the risk of having a higher BMI compared to people who sleep seven to nine hours.
You get ready in the dark – Not opening the blinds to the morning light could keep you from missing out on weight-loss benefits from the sun, according to another study. The research shows that people who got early morning sun had significantly lower BMIs than those who didn’t, no matter how much they ate.
You don’t make your bed – A National Sleep Foundation survey found that people who make their beds were 19% more likely to report getting a good night’s sleep compared to the non-bed-makers. Since sleeping well is linked to a lower BMI, spending a few minutes making your bed can really help.
You skip the scale – Cornell University research shows people who weigh themselves everyday had more success with losing weight and keeping it off. And the best time to step on the scale is first thing in the morning, when the numbers will be most accurate.
You skimp at breakfast – According to researchers from Tel Aviv University, low-cal dieters who ate a balanced 600-calorie breakfast of lean protein, carbs, and even something sweet reported less hunger and fewer cravings during the day than people who ate a low-carb 300-calorie breakfast.
