The Most Germ-Filled Item In Your Office Isn’t What You Think
We all know that it’s smart to wash our hands after using the bathroom, especially because of all the bacteria that’s growing in that environment, but that’s not the only place where we’re all susceptible to bacteria that could get us sick. While many of us have likely heard reports that our computers are just as bad as anything we touch in the bathroom, new research reveals that it’s probably a lot worse than we actually think.
In case you missed it, testing done by CBT Nuggets, an IT training website based in Oregon, finds that a person’s computer keyboard actually has 3,543,000 bacteria per square inch, which is 20,000 times more bacteria than what you’ll find on a toilet bowl, while that mouse you have your hand on most of the day has 1,370,068, which is 45,000 times more grossness than what’s on the flushing handle.
And those aren’t the only gross things you’re touching every day in the office. That ID badge that lets you enter your office has about 4,620,000 bacteria per square inch, which is 243 times more germs than a pet toy. Your phone, meanwhile, has 1,600,082, which is 31,3745 times more than the bacteria found on a pen.
And don’t think that bacteria can’t get you sick. Among the types found on these items are bacilli, a common cause of food poisoning, and gram-positive cocci, which can cause a Streptococcal infection. Other bacteria includes gram-positive rods and gram-negative rods.
