How To Deal When Your Coffee Buzz Wears Off Too Fast

There’s nothing quite like a cup of freshly brewed coffee to get you going in the morning, but the caffeine crash that follows is the worst. A lot of us just pour another cup, but drinking our buzzy brew all day isn’t the healthiest choice, so what is?

Nutritionist Keri Glassman says there is a healthier alternative, but she wants to make one thing clear first. “Caffeine does not give you energy,” she explains. “The only thing that can provide that is calories.” She says caffeine works like a painkiller – it makes you feel a certain way for a while – but then it wears off and you’re back to normal. So when we’re coming down off that caffeine high and we’re not feeling alert and awake anymore, here’s how she says we can cope.

  • Drink up (as in water) – If you’re sitting in an office all day, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. But being dehydrated can make you feel tired, Glassman points out. So keep your water bottle filled and drink up so you feel less of the effects of the caffeine dip.
  • Give your body real fuel – Caffeine gives you fake energy, but drinking coffee instead of eating breakfast isn’t helping you stay energized for long. Glassman reminds us that we need nutrient dense food to stay energized.
  • Give yourself a bedtime – You might hear it all the time, but that’s only because it’s true – get more sleep. Sure, that’s easier said than done, but it can help you with the post-coffee crash. Coffee is a Band-Aid, not a solution, Glassman says.
