Great News For Cheese Addicts: Full-fat Is Healthier

For anyone who loves cheese and has sadly skipped over the cheddar in favor of the low-fat mozzarella, science says you don’t need to anymore. According to a study from the University of Copenhagen, full-fat cheese doesn’t affect bad cholesterol and actually raises good cholesterol.

Researchers divided volunteers into three groups, one lucky group ate a “high daily intake” of cheese – about three ounces – another ate reduced-fat cheese, and the third group ate an equivalent amount of bread and jam. This sounds like a study I’d like to participate in!

Turns out, the full-fat cheese eaters had no significant difference in signs of risk, like waist size and insulin. And they ended up with higher good cholesterol levels than the bread and jam group.

So what does this all mean? Saturated fat has been thought of as the bad guy for raising the risk of heart disease and stroke. But more and more studies are showing that might not be true. Of course, this doesn’t mean we should chow down on a whole wheel of Brie regularly, but it does mean that when you’re at the cheese section, choose the ones you like, not the ones that you think are healthier because they’re low-fat.
