No More Poles in Vienna’s Firehouses
When you think of a firehouse, you probably think of people sliding down a pole when they get a call. That’s no longer true in Vienna, Austria. The city has removed the last fireman’s pole left.
There’s two reasons. One, new or renovated stations are laid out in a way that means sliding down the pole doesn’t save any time. Plus, as fire department spokesman Lukas Schauer explains, “Stairs are safer.”
Now, the only fireman’s pole left in the Austrian capital is in their firefighter’s museum.
