A teenage couple in China sold their baby for an iPhone. That’s right. The father of the year, who is being referred to by the fake name A Duan, found a stranger via social media that agreed to pay $3,550 for his 18-day-old daughter.

The baby’s mother, who is going by Xiao Mei, agreed to the plan for the money, which the couple was going to use for an iPhone and a motorcycle. “I myself was adopted, and many people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them,” Xiao Mei claims. “I really didn’t know that it was illegal.” How about colossally stupid? Just plain wrong?!

The jig was up when the man who bought the baby turned himself in. He gave the newborn to his sister, who still has her while police figure out what to do. A Duan is now facing three years behind bars. No word on if the not-so-loving mother will face any charges.
