A Hospital Built For Murder?
At the epicenter of the investigation is Dr. Shen Zhongyang, who was credited with performing more than 1,600 liver transplants. After patenting his own surgical technique, official transplantation websites were calling him China’s “great transplant pioneer.” And that’s why the facility kept getting expanded at an incredible rate – with staffing to match.
But then came word that a number of the healthy organs he was getting weren’t from voluntary donors, but rather, came from prison inmates. And then a review of the numbers followed, which showed that transplants at Tianjin were off the charts compared to other hospitals. And because official numbers are considered a “state secret,” no one may every know how bad the problem has really been.
