Spanish Town Throws Turnips at Man as Part of Festival
Hundreds of people ran the street of the small Spanish town of Piornal pelting a man with turnips. The crazy part? The man volunteered and this is all part of the annual Jarramplas festival.
Each year, a local resident volunteers to wear a color costume made of ribbons and a devilish mask with horns. They run through the town beating a drum and getting hit with turnips. Local farmers donated about 18 tons of turnips for the festival and the throwing only stops when the volunteer can’t take it anymore.
No one knows for sure where the custom originated from, but there are multiple theories. The official tourism office says the Jarramplas figure represents a cattle thief while others say it has religious roots. Either way, the two day festival ends with food and music, and presumably a lot of clean up.
