While some people have given up booze this month to help them lose a few pounds, there’s a growing number of people out there who wouldn’t give up their drink for anything. In fact, they’d rather give up food than their daily glass of wine.
A new report out of the UK suggests that 5% of women actually skip meals or cut back on their food intake in order to save their calories for alcohol. And believe it or not, this behavior actually a name, experts call it “drunkorexia.”
Of course skipping a meal for booze is far from healthy because, while the calorie intake may be the same, there’s no nutritional value and a glass of Vino.
“Swapping food for alcohol is never a good idea,” nutritionist Fiona Hunter explains. “Substituting food calories for alcohol calories starves your body of essential vitamins and minerals, which can lead to a deficiency over time and have long term health impacts.” Bet they’ll be too drunk to notice.
