Startling news out of London today as it has been confirmed that David Bowie has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 69.”David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer,” reads a statement posted to Facebook. “While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief. One of music’s most influential singer/songwriter/producers, it’s hard to find a genre of music he didn’t touch during his 40-plus-year career. Working until the end, he just released his 25th album, “Blackstar,” this past Friday – January 8th, which was also his birthday.
Even more haunting, his song, “Lazarus,” takes on a very different meaning now that we know what he was fighting at the time it was created. Even more, the fact that it was released January 7th. Bowie is survived by his wife, Iman, whom he married in 1992, as well as his son, director Duncan Jones; and daughter Alexandria.
Rest well, David – thank you for the music, both what you created – and what you inspired. Our thoughts are especially with his family at this time.
